Telehandler Operations

Course Description

This course provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely and effectively operate a telescopic materials handler (telehandler) in construction, mining, resources, infrastructure and other workplace environments.

Participants will develop practical skills in planning and preparing for telehandler operations, conducting pre-start inspections, operating the machine safely, handling and positioning loads, using attachments and completing routine operator maintenance.

The training focuses on safe work practices, workplace procedures, manufacturer requirements and applicable health and safety legislation and standards.

Course Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand Safety and Legislative Requirements
    • Identify relevant workplace health and safety requirements.
    • Understand operator responsibilities and legislative obligations.
    • Follow manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures.
  2. Identify Work Requirements and Prepare for Operations
    • Identify work requirements, site conditions and operating hazards.
    • Review relevant work instructions and procedures.
    • Select appropriate PPE and equipment for the task.
  3. Conduct Pre-Operational Checks
    • Perform pre-start and safety inspections.
    • Identify faults, damage and potential hazards.
    • Report defects in accordance with workplace procedures.
  4. Operate a Telehandler Safely
    • Start, operate and control the telehandler safely.
    • Maintain awareness of pedestrians, other equipment and site hazards.
    • Operate the machine in accordance with workplace and manufacturer requirements.
  5. Attach, Secure, Lift, Carry and Place Materials
    • Select and handle loads safely.
    • Attach and secure loads correctly.
    • Lift, carry, transport and place materials while maintaining machine stability and control.
  6. Select, Remove and Fit Attachments
    • Select suitable attachments for the required task.
    • Safely remove and fit attachments.
    • Check that attachments are correctly secured before operation.
  7. Relocate the Telehandler
    • Prepare the telehandler for relocation.
    • Follow safe travel and relocation procedures.
    • Maintain control of the machine during movement around the worksite.
  8. Carry Out Operator Maintenance
    • Perform routine operator maintenance and basic servicing checks.
    • Identify and report equipment faults or maintenance requirements.
    • Maintain the machine in a safe and serviceable condition.
  9. Clean Up the Work Area
    • Complete shutdown and parking procedures.
    • Secure the machine and attachments after use.
    • Clean and leave the work area in a safe condition.

Safety and Compliance

Safety is a key focus of this training. Participants are required to follow workplace health and safety requirements, manufacturer instructions, safe operating procedures and applicable legislation and industry standards.

Important: Telehandler licensing requirements depend on the type of telehandler and the work being performed. Where the equipment falls within the relevant High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) requirements, participants must meet the applicable licensing and assessment requirements.
