Course Description

This course provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely and effectively operate a roller in civil construction and other site-based work environments.

The training is designed for individuals working in operational roles who are required to conduct roller operations as part of their workplace duties. Participants will develop practical skills in planning and preparing for operations, following workplace procedures, operating the roller safely and efficiently, working with others and completing tasks to the required standard.

Where the assessment requires participants to demonstrate the fitting and removal of attachments, an integrated tool carrier unit will be used where applicable.

Course Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Plan and Prepare for Roller Operations
    • Identify work requirements, site conditions and potential hazards.
    • Locate and follow relevant workplace documentation, policies and procedures.
    • Conduct required pre-start checks and prepare the roller for operation.
    • Select appropriate PPE and equipment for the task.
  2. Operate the Roller Safely and Effectively
    • Operate the roller in accordance with manufacturer instructions and workplace requirements.
    • Apply safe operating techniques to complete civil construction activities.
    • Maintain control of the machine and monitor surrounding workers, equipment and site conditions.
  3. Apply Workplace Procedures
    • Follow relevant operational procedures and instructions.
    • Identify and respond appropriately to hazards and changing site conditions.
    • Use equipment and controls safely and efficiently.
  4. Work Effectively with Others
    • Communicate with other workers and site personnel during operations.
    • Coordinate activities to safely complete the required work.
    • Follow workplace communication and traffic management requirements where applicable.
  5. Complete Roller Operations
    • Carry out roller operations safely, effectively and efficiently.
    • Complete work activities in accordance with required outcomes and workplace standards.
    • Demonstrate competency in roller operations on at least two occasions, where required for assessment.
  6. Complete Shutdown and Housekeeping
    • Safely park and shut down the roller.
    • Conduct post-operation checks.
    • Report faults, damage or maintenance requirements.
    • Leave the work area clean, safe and organised.

Assessment Requirements

To demonstrate competency, participants must provide evidence that they can:

  • Locate and apply relevant documentation, policies and procedures.
  • Apply the required requirements, procedures and techniques for safe and effective roller operations.
  • Work effectively with others to complete roller operations.
  • Successfully perform roller operations on at least two occasions, demonstrating safe, effective and efficient work practices.

Assessment evidence will be relevant to the participant’s operational role and the work activities being undertaken.
